This Week's Devotion
Matthew 11:6, "And blessed is he who is not offended because of me." In the midst of John the Baptist's trouble with Herald, he sent word to Jesus asking if He was the Christ. He needed reassurance in a time of great trouble. John the Baptist was like many of us when someone hurts us deeply. We need a touch from the Master. So Jesus taught him a valuable truth; blessings come to those who face trouble without becoming vengeful or offended.
The question in our minds is how do we respond when someone hurts us? First of all, we do not retaliate. Our natural response is to strike back; even the score. Most of us have had plenty of practice with this attitude in our past life. This only causes confusion, and usually we surrender our responsibilities in the Lord. No, the only action that can be taken is to act Godly. I find three avenues available to us.
First, we must understand the nature of the attacks against us. These are assaults on our integrity, emotions and ministry by the Devil. He will send people to attack us. Satan knows we are anointed by God to do a work for Him, so he attempts to cause us to be offended by others. In this way he draws our attention away from the main thing; winning the lost to Christ. These attacks are meant to rob us of our peace and blessings. We must not strike back in hatefulness or spitefulness; don't take offense.
Next, we rejoice. That's right, we rejoice. Peter said, "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but REJOICE to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be GLAD with exceeding JOY (I Peter 4:12-13)." Peter said persecution sets us up for blessings. I agree! Remember, we are empowered to succeed, so rejoice. Persecution opens the door for us to step to a higher plane of service.
Finally, we must remain in a position to be blessed. Running from our troubles will never yield spiritual maturity. Nor will becoming offended by others. Jesus says we are to, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you (Luke 6:27-28)." Pray not to be placed aside in ministry, but to be used in ministry. Stay in a position to be blessed by Jesus; on our knees before HIM in prayer!
